Son
Kim
September 3, 1932 — February 24, 2024
Son-Ok Kim, 91, of Jinhae, South Korea, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, February 24, 2024. She was born on September 3, 1932, to the late Pil-Sun Jung and Jung-Do Kim.
Son led a remarkable life marked by resilience, hard work, and love. As the eldest of seven siblings, she took on the responsibility of supporting her family after her father's passing. Through various endeavors including real estate sales, teaching, and owning a dressmaking boutique, "White Rose," she provided unwavering support to her loved ones as the sole breadwinner.
In pursuit of better opportunities and education for her daughter, Song Hui Dunlap (nee Kim), Son immigrated to the United States in January 1978. She worked tirelessly as a seamstress before retiring early to help raise her grandchildren, Justin Tuma and Jessie Tuma, whom she cherished deeply.
Son formed numerous friendships within the Korean and Japanese communities wherever she lived. As a multilingual individual, her fluency in Korean, Japanese, and English, as well as her proficiency in reading Chinese, fostered many connections and meaningful relationships with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. She was a familiar face on her neighborhood walks, always ready to strike up a conversation and make new acquaintances.
An accomplished seamstress, Son took immense pleasure in creating her own clothing, crafting the majority of her wardrobe throughout her life. Her talent extended beyond personal attire as she thoughtfully made garments for many others, including suits and wedding gowns, leaving a lasting impact on those around her with skill and generosity.
Among her passions were listening to music, particularly the melodies of Japanese enka singer Misora Hibari, and practicing traditional calligraphy painting, a skill she honed under the guidance of her dear friend, Yuriko Tomita.
Son is survived by her devoted daughter, Song Hui Dunlap, son-in-law Conan Dunlap, and grandsons Justin Tuma and Jessie Tuma, who currently reside in Clovis, California.
A private funeral service will be held at Clovis Funeral Chapel, 1302 Clovis Ave, on March 2,2024, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, where family and close friends will gather to honor and celebrate her remarkable life.
