Obituary

Ruth Christensen
August 27, 1928 – May 10, 2025

On the morning of May 10th, 2025, in Clovis, California, Ruth Christensen passed away peacefully at the age of 96. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that her extraordinary life was one marked by strength, elegance, and fierce independence.

Born in the quiet town of Båring on the island of Fyn, Denmark, Ruth was the cherished daughter of Hans Madsen and Julie Møller. When she moved to the United States, she brought with her the traditions, resilience, and warmth of her Danish roots, which she would carry proudly throughout her life.

In 1952 Ruth married the love of her life, Carl Christensen, with whom she built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and enduring memories. She was predeceased by her husband Carl and daughter Susan, and is survived by daughters Vivian and Linda, and her beloved grandchildren Brittanni, Chelsea, and Carl, and great-grandchildren Eowyn, Samuel, Julius, Elizabeth, and Trent, each of whom carry forward her legacy in their hearts.

Ruth—known affectionately to her family as Mormor and Oldemor—was the embodiment of strength and grace. Those who knew her often said, "When she put her mind to something, nothing could stand in her way." She was mentally strong, endlessly determined, and vibrantly full of life.

To her family, Mormor was magic. She was the holder of holiday traditions and quiet bedtime stories, of heart-shaped pancakes and Danish Christmas soup. She wore her large rings and amber necklaces with unmistakable flair, always showcasing her exceptional sense of style. Whether she was line-dancing in metallic gold shoes, hiking the trails of Lake Tahoe, golfing at the club, swimming laps in her pool, or entertaining guests, Mormor was always in motion—rarely seen sitting when there were people to care for.

Her family recalls the hours spent pouring love into every sweater and slipper she knitted for her loved ones and can still hear the sound of her voice exclaiming "Nej da!" when something outrageous was shared between friends.

A certified nurse, Ruth was incredibly proud of her career in healthcare. Even after retirement, she kept her RNA certification up to date—a testament to her fierce determination to always be capable of providing for her family, if the need ever arose. She worked hard to maintain her status as a Grand Master playing bridge, and was a skilled needlepointer, an avid cook, and an exceptional hostess.

Ruth would want to be remembered as a woman who never stopped moving, never stopped giving, and never stopped loving. She lived her life independently and actively, always leading with a generous heart and unmatched strength of spirit.

A public viewing will be held at Clovis Funeral Chapel this Tuesday, May 20th from 8-11 am, where cards and flowers can be sent. Private graveside services for the family will follow. Donations may be made to the Danish American Historical Society in Ruth's name.

Mormor, you were our anchor, our joy, and our constant inspiration. Your laughter, your love, and your legacy will remain forever etched in our hearts. Thank you for showing us how to live fully, love fiercely, and dance—always—in gold shoes. Your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, hold the happiness in our hearts that one day, "Vi skal ses igen."
