Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rosalie Nan Gald, 84, of Fresno, CA, on June 14, 2025.

Rosalie was born July 17, 1940, in Oklahoma City OK. At age 1 her parents, Russell Harper Sr and Estelle Cobb Harper, along with her older brother Russell Jr, moved to Globe AZ. In 1947 the family settled permanently in Fresno CA and lived on Ferger St in the Tower District. Rosalie was a member of First Lutheran Church, just catacorner from her house. Her love for the Lord grew and she was strong in her faith from this time till she passed.

She graduated from Fresno High School in 1958 which is where she met and fell in love with Merrill V. Gald at age 16. They married November 20, 1959, at age 19 and spent the next 65 years together and had two children. Rosalie earned her teaching degree with honors from CSUF and taught at Ernie Pyle Elementary school until her full retirement. She loved her students and was fully invested in their learning and their life skills. She advocated for students with an incarcerated parent and those who didn't have English as their first language.

After retirement, she spent her time volunteering with Prison Fellowship. She drove to the Chowchilla Women's Prison's twice a week to guide women in Bible studies, personal growth, and to help equip them for a new life once out of prison. She would often walk the prison yard unescorted to visit with the women.

An avid reader, educator, volunteer at church in various roles through her lifetime, helper and guide to many in the Fresno community, Rosalie was a great example of loving thy neighbor, as Jesus asks of us. She had a great love for her family and extended family. She enjoyed celebrating achievements and birthdays of others, wrote letters back and forth to her great-granddaughter Cora, had a special love for her young neighbors, and was devoted to her church family and Hmong church members.

A beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by husband, Merrill Gald, son Shannon Gald, daughter in-law Brenda (Kaufman) Gald, daughter Shelley (Gald) Young, son in-law Jeffery Cole Young, grandchildren; Matthew Gald (wife Amanda McDaniel Gald), Justin Gald (wife Dr. Kristen Tentler), Madison Young Stabler (husband Sean Stabler), Natalie Young. Great-grandchildren; Cora Gald, Gavin Gald, Aubrie Chain, Jackie Rose Chain. She will be dearly missed by her many extended family members, her neighbors, church community, and longtime friends.

Rosalie's Service will be at Peace Lutheran Church at 4672 N. Cedar Ave, Fresno CA on Saturday July 5th, 2025 at 11 am with a lunch following.
