Obituary

In Loving Memory of Laura Elizabeth Mercer

Laura Elizabeth Mercer was born on January 20, 1969, in Escondido, California, and passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026. She was 57 years old.

Laura is survived by her father, John Balas, her two sons, Joshua Mercer and Clayton Mercer, and her two grandchildren, Liam Mercer and Dara Mercer. She was preceded in death by her mother, Juanita Balas, on May 20, 2016.

A lifelong resident of California, Laura grew up in Poway, California, near San Diego, before moving with her parents to Fresno, California, where she attended and graduated from Miracle Christian School in 1985 before later attending Clovis High School. During her youth, she traveled to Jamaica and Alaska. She later made her home in Clovis, California, after living in Fresno. She had an energetic spirit wherever she went and would often introduce herself when meeting new people.

Laura dedicated herself to a variety of roles, including working with Clovis Unified School District as a Nutrition Assistant. She also cherished her role as a mother, raising two boys and making sure her family attended church. She was known for her resolute spirit, compassion, vivacious personality, and faith.

Laura also had a deep compassion and love for animals, especially the stray dogs she cared for with tenderness and dedication. She found happiness in life's simple pleasures, and her presence made ordinary moments feel special.

Laura would spend her last dollar making others happy with gifts whenever she could and always tried to help those in need by donating food, dedicating her time, and offering prayers. She also always had a spontaneity about her and reminded people of her good looks. Laura will be remembered for her love for her family and care for animals, her quirky and funny remarks, and her constant reminder that while we are all surrounded by family and loved ones, life is a blessing—and to focus on the positives around us.

Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in knowing she is now at peace, free from pain, reunited with loved ones, especially her mother, whom she deeply missed. Laura, you are forever loved and will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.
